Waterline is a progressive rock concept album dedicated to the the thin line dividing the world emerged from the water (the familiar one) from the submerged world (the unknown one). Originally conceived as an instrumental project, it has become an album with lyrics, with the vocals taken care of by Aldo Tagliapietra, the leader of the legendary Italian prog band Le Orme. Thanks to the genial painting created by Paul Whitehead (collaborator of early Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, Le Orme, etc.), for the album artwork, the original waterline has become an accomplished surreal scene with characters and real objects. This new scene inspired Alex Carpani, Dan Shapiro and Paul Whitehead for the lyrics writing and the final titles of the album playlist. Waterline has been composed in three weeks by Alex Carpani in his home-studio during a long period of immobility due to a serious ankle fracture. Several prestigious musicians of the American prog scene have been involved in the recordings: Neil Bettencourt (drums and percussion), Dan Shapiro and Ken Jaquess (bass), Tony Spada, John Thomas, Robert Wolfe and Marc Pattison (guitars), Cory Wright (saxophones and flute), etc..

Waterline è un concept album di rock progressivo dedicato al “pelo dell’acqua”, quel sottile confine tra il mondo sommerso ed il mondo emerso, tra due universi confinanti ed attigui, ma profondamente diversi. E’ la sottile linea di demarcazione tra ciò che ci è familiare, o ci sembra familiare, e l’ignoto. Nato in principio come un disco interamente strumentale, si è successivamente trasformato in un disco anche cantato, con le parti vocali affidate ad Aldo Tagliapietra (Le orme). La geniale interpretazione pittorica di Paul Whitehead (collaboratore dei primi Genesis, dei VDGG, di Le Orme, ecc.) è partita dalla "linea d'acqua" per arrivare ad una rappresentazione tridimensionale surreale ed evocativa, animata da esseri viventi e oggetti riconoscibili. Questa scena ha fornito l'ispirazione ad Alex Carpani, Dan Shapiro ed allo stesso Paul Whitehead per scrivere i testi dell'album e per dare i titoli definitivi ai brani. Waterline è nato nel 2003 in tre settimane nell’home-studio di Alex Carpani il quale, costretto all’immobilità da un pesante gesso alla gamba destra, conseguenza di una brutta frattura alla caviglia rimediata durante una partita di calcetto… Nella realizzazione del disco sono stati coinvolti dei musicisti molto quotati della scena prog americana, tra cui: Neil Bettencourt (batteria e percussioni), Dan Shapiro e Ken Jaquess (basso), Tony Spada, John Thomas, Robert Wolfe e Marc Pattison (chitarre), Cory Wright (sassofoni e flauto), ecc.
